Nearly 450 young men and women have received training in carpet weaving skills at Afghan Action’s Karte Se site in Kabul since September 2005. They learn how to weave traditional handmade carpets and also do literacy and numeracy classes – the vast majority come to us unable to read and write in their own language, Dari. We also provide on-site healthcare and a nourishing midday meal, now generously supplied by the Supreme Foundation. Many have been sponsored by individuals, charitable trusts, churches and companies, for which we are deeply grateful.
We have just started a new 2 year programme, to train 46 people to sew and make clothes. Each trainee will be with us for a year’s training and will not only acquire practical sewing and clothes-making skills but will also take part in our education programme - to learn to read and write in Dari ( if they haven’t been to school) and to acquire ICT, English and enterprise development skills.
Through the winter of 2010/11, we piloted English, ICT and enterprise development training and it proved popular and effective – so now that will be the norm for all trainees, who will spend 12 months with us learning to make carpets or clothes and partaking in education. Please see:
