Kelmscott School designed a complicated carpet and Afghan Action made it. The school liked it so much they are considering ordering another!

Kelmscott Carpet Weavers

Fawzia

Fawzia was working as a Trainee (sponsored by G4S) and then became a worker and participated in T2GO (new project to train people in business skills). She is living with her parents and she has 4 sisters and 1 brother. Fawzia and her sister are working in Afghan Action and also her father is wood seller in Kabul.

Fawzia is one of our most talented weaver and hard worker. Despite of economic problems she continues her education. She is working for Afghan Action from 0800 to 1300 and then going to school. 

The T2GO project has been very beneficial for her and helped her to learn English, Computing and Business Skills.

Working with trainers, she has weaved the Kelmscott carpet, which is one of the toughest carpets ever weaved at Afghan Action. 

Soma

Soma has worked as trainee with Afghan Action for a long time , but after completing some tough carpets she was appointed as a worker. She was 14 when she jointed Afghan Action. Interestingly Soma taught her sister how to weave a carpet and her sister is also working for Afghan Action.
 
Soma has participated in weaving the Kelmscott carpet, which was the toughest carpet to make from Belgian wool and a complicated design.

Ghulam Sakhi, Shakila and Farooq are master trainers in Afghan Action.  These three trainers, with the coordination of their supervisor, worked with Fawzia and Soma to weave the Kelmscott order, which took 3 months to weave. 

Ghulam Sakhi

Ghulam Sakhi has been working with Afghan Action for 5 years. He is a qualified carpet weaver and has a team of trainees, teaching them how to adjust the looms and weave the carpets.

Ghulam Sakhi has four children and also his mother is dependent on him. His youngest daughter is 8 years old and due to the poverty she cannot go to school.

Shakila

Shakila has been working for three years in Afghan Action. She is expert in carpet weaving and has responsibility for 2 looms and 5 trainees.

Shakila is responsible for 14 people in her family - only Shakila and her brother are working and earning for her family.

Farooq

Farooq is working with Afghan Action. He is going to school part time, and also following some courses outside Afghan Action. He is living with his family and he is responsible only for his pocket money.

He is responsible for 3 looms and 8 male trainees. He is good at managing the trainees and training.  Farooq wants to be educated to become a good qualified teacher in future.
