Two new members of the team have joined the Afghan Training Foundation in April 2010 to take forward our work in the UK to raise awareness about Afghanistan.

Zarlashta Behzadi is our Outreach and Administration Officer. A Languages Graduate of Kings College, London, Zarlashta has been working for the Citizen’s Advice Bureau in Greenwich and Camden and, prior to that, law firm Mishcon de Reya.

Hashim Alavi is our part time Outreach Officer and has been doing an MA in Post-War Recovery and Development at the University of York since October 2009. Prior to that he was the Senior Political Affairs Assistant/National Special Assistant to the Special Representative of the Secretary-General, United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan.

Zarlashta and Hashim are both of Afghan origin and bring knowledge, commitment and enthusiasm to the work.

Working in Partnership - Gifted and Talented
Primary School Children Link Up With Afghan Teenagers

Gifted and Talented students from Elmhurst, Sandringham and Selwyn Primary Schools are all taking part in an exciting new project that links them with young carpet making apprentices in Afghanistan.

The children are working in partnership with Afghan Action, a charity set up to support young Afghans to develop a trade which will drastically improve their standard of living in war torn Afghanistan. All the apprentices, many of whom have never been to school before, are given lessons in literacy and numeracy skills as well as meals and an allowance while they learn their trade.

Chris Beales from Afghan Action is excited about the project, “The exciting thing about this is not only the positive response of the schools and children, but the involvement of Jane (Robinson, GT Co-ordinator for the borough) and Twist - as this is “mainstreaming” the work we’re doing to raise awareness about Afghanistan in schools”.

After three weeks in Peshawar and another fortnight in Dubai, our latest batch of carpets has arrived in the UK. We have photographed them and they will be shortly available to view and purchase on the website of our good friends, Edinburgh-based carpet retailers Nomads’ Tent – see www.nomadstent.co.uk
