Working in Partnership - Gifted and Talented
Primary School Children Link Up With Afghan Teenagers

Gifted and Talented students from Elmhurst, Sandringham and Selwyn Primary Schools are all taking part in an exciting new project that links them with young carpet making apprentices in Afghanistan.

The children are working in partnership with Afghan Action, a charity set up to support young Afghans to develop a trade which will drastically improve their standard of living in war torn Afghanistan. All the apprentices, many of whom have never been to school before, are given lessons in literacy and numeracy skills as well as meals and an allowance while they learn their trade.

Chris Beales from Afghan Action is excited about the project, “The exciting thing about this is not only the positive response of the schools and children, but the involvement of Jane (Robinson, GT Co-ordinator for the borough) and Twist - as this is “mainstreaming” the work we’re doing to raise awareness about Afghanistan in schools”.
